On Saturday night, Julanne and I ventured into Canton to scout a band. We walked into a dive called Sadie Rene’s, not knowing what to expect. From the low ceilings to the old standard bar furniture and even the dj, channeling Tommy Chong’s Leo on “That 70’s Show,” Sadie’s, full of women sporting Kate’s asymmetrical haircut of 2006, felt like a throwback within a throwback.

The club filled up quickly, mostly of women, but also of some men, mostly there to be with their women. The population ranged from suburban housewives to bikers to your run of the mill blue collar types, ready to let loose after a hard week at work.

Sadie’s is nothing if not full of characters, including the tall, thin, middle-aged cowboy and the voluptuous Siouxsie Sioux-influenced woman sporting a lace dress, opera gloves, a fan and a mask, which came on and off as her mood dictated.  These two polar opposites just wanted to dance and, by the time 80’s cover band New Wave Nation opened the set with Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf,” everyone was up on their feet, letting it all hang out, no apologies.

Julanne and I had a great time, since we never really left the 80’s.

Why would we?
